The 36th Annual Schnecksville Communtiy Fair starts today and runs through June 22nd.  Gates open at 5:00 pm with Opening Ceremonies at 7:30 pm and an Antique Tractor Parade at 8:00 pm.

The Schnecksville Community Fair originally started as a Fire Company carnival, consisting of hay rides on a 1932 fire truck and a hot dog stand.  Now it’s a full fledged fair with carnival rides, entertainment, animals, a midway, lots of food stands and competitive exhibits. It’s become the best attended event in northwestern Lehigh County with the purpose of providing several days of family fun and excitement for the entire community.

Scott Marshall & Marshall’s Highway

If you enjoy sampling food, Schnecksville Community Fair has a great selection of Pennsylvania Dutch food in their Fire Company Cafe’ with specials daily.  Today they have pork and sauerkraut. On Wednesday they have turkey with filling, Thursday a hot roast beef sandwich and french fries, Friday a picnic platter including turkey or pork barbecue and a side and Saturday’s specials are cabbage and noodles with sausage or ham.  Plus they have other favorites in the midway such as wings, pizza, fresh cut french fries, pit beet, hot sausage, pulled pork and of course cotton candy, ice cream and candy apples.

Expect to see over 150 dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, chickens and rabbits in the livestock barns this year.  Many of these animals are owned and shown by 4-H members from all over southeastern Pennsylvania. Many are entered in the livestock competition.  The 4-H-ers also organize and work in the 4-H Barnyard Zoo at the fair. The Zoo features rabbits, goats, dairy calf and sheep.

Each evening there is a different species of animal featured in the Show Ring Pavillion.  Tonight is dairy night.  It starts at  6:30 pm. Wednesday is swine, sheep and rabbits with the swine show before the fair opens at 4:00 pm and others at 6:00 pm.  Thursday is steer and dairy beef at 6:00 pm and Friday is market and breeding meat goats at 4:00 pm with dairy goats at 5:00 pm.  Kids can also learn how to milk a “pretend” cow in the “Wanna Be a Farmer” tent at the fair.

Last year nearly $12,000 in cash was awarded in the twenty-four departments of fair competition with ribbons given out to nearly all exhibitors.

Expect to see competitive departments for various animal classes, a Food and Canned Goods Department with over 175 different classes of homemade goodies or canned foods. You will find everything from a jar of pickles to apple dumplings.   The Needlecraft Department has many categories – from Afghans to Handcrafted clothing and a special Quilt contest.  There is an Arts, Photography and Crafts Department, Wine and Spirits Department and even a Legos contest in the Youth Department.

There is so much to do at the fair!  For a detailed list of events, please check the schedule. Expect entertainment nightly, an International Chainsaw Carving Competition, Keystone State Quarter Midget Club Race and a Children’s Pedal Tractor Pull – plus Fireworks Friday evening at 10:00 pm.
