2nd person dies from house explosion in Lackawanna County

ROARING BROOK TWP., Pa. - According to Lehigh County Coroner, Daniel Buglio, a second person has died as a result of a house explosion in Lackawanna County.


According to the coroner's office, 91-year-old Leon W. Gruss was pronounced dead at 12:38 am on August 21 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. The manner of death was ruled an accident.


Mr. Gruss was injured when his house exploded and caught fire on Tuesday, August 20 at approximately 2:15 pm in the 1000 Block of Mount Cobb Road.



A 75-year-old woman was also killed.


The coroner's office says Gruss suffered 51% total body surface area burns to the body from the house explosion and fire. 


State police say the cause of the explosion was due to a propane leak from an unknown source within the structure.


 In addition to the coroner's office, the Pennsylvania State Police, Dunmore Station and the Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Company are also investigating.
