Due to the forecasted high of 95 degrees in Reading on Wednesday, the Animal Rescue League of Berks County has once again issued a Code Red for pets and their caregivers in the city.
This alert will be in effect from noon to 6 p.m.
Owners and caretakers of dogs in Reading are required to keep them indoors, with the exception of supervised bathroom breaks and exercise due to the forecasted high temperatures.
This measure was added to the city code in 2015.
The ARL emphasized, “High temperatures and humidity can cause animals to overheat, which can lead to serious health complications.” Noncompliance could lead to the animal being removed by an animal control officer from the property and impounded at the ARL’s Cumru Township facility.
Owners would have 48 hours after the Code Red has been lifted to pick up their dogs and will be subject to applicable boarding fees.
If you witness an unsupervised dog left outside in Reading during those hours, please call the ARL at 610-373-8830.
Even when Code Red is only enforceable within the City of Reading, they encourage every pet owner in Berks County to take precautions with their pets while the high temperatures last.
