WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - The cause of the fire which started in Whitehall Township around 11 am on Monday, displacing multiple people and damaging homes, remains unknown.

A fire official says crews have not been able to determine the cause of the fire, according to a WFMZ news report.

WFMZ also said that according to Whitehall Deputy Fire Marshal Mark Bilder, where they believe the fire at the 400 block of Carolina Avenue started collapsed, so the cause will remain undetermined.

Bilder said the insurance company involved will conduct its own fire investigation.

The fire filled the air with flames and smoke and quickly spread to other houses.

The homes were built in the '70s or '80s before firewalls were required by law, according to Bilder. Bilder said there were firewalls in the homes, but they only went up three floors and did not reach into the attic or crawl space.

Bilder also said Monday's good weather kept the fire from getting worse.

He said, "We didn't have a high wind, so we didn't have a spread. Once we got the trench cut in place, that stopped the spread of the fire, we were able to extinguish the fire at that point."
