The community is remembering a beloved athletic director and wrestling coach who died following an accident in Monroe County

"It's just one of those situations that you're never ready for and even though it's been 24 hours, it's still not real," said Steven Powell, former Easton wrestling coach.

Authorities said Richmond, who was the wrestling coach and athletic director at Stroudsburg, died following an accident on I-380 in Tobyhanna Township Saturday night. State Police said they received numerous calls for a person being hit by a tractor trailer.

"He's got two great daughters, a great wife, great situation and this tragedy struck us last night," said Powell. Powell coached the star werestler in the early 2000s.

"Sean was certainly committed to wrestling, but he was part of a program that won a state championship in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004," said Powell.

Powell said those were among a long running list of Richmond's accomplishments, which also includes a win against one wrestler who went on to win an Olympic Gold Medal.

"So not many people have that on their resume, that they've beaten an Olympic Gold Medal winner," said Powell.

He said Richmond went onto have a very good wrestling career at Pitt and worked at Delaware Valley, Easton and Stroudsburg.

"There's so many that you're so proud of and I guess the product of where they are 20 years after being in high school is really the reward, to see how well he's doing and how well he's done," said Powell.

Powell said he would talk with Richmond 2 or 3 times a week and just saw him this past week.

"You know, you get so depressed and sad about the accident and the death of Sean, and then you just think of Sean and it brings a smile to your face. And I think everybody's going to remember Sean with a big old smile and you know he's just a model kid and to me, virtually a son," said Powell.

Many other organizations have posted tributes on social media.

At this time there's no word on what may have led up to the crash.

A GoFundMe is raising money for his family.
