FAA bans drones over parts of New Jersey, cautions government that they may employ 'deadly force' if drones pose a threat

The Federal Aviation Administration has temporarily prohibited drone operations over certain areas of New Jersey until mid-January and cautioned that the government may employ “deadly force” against drones that pose a threat.

Beginning Wednesday and continuing through January 17, unmanned aircraft are restricted from flying within a nautical mile of designated airspace specified in an FAA Notice to Airmen, or NOTAM.

If the drones pose an “imminent security threat,” the government may resort to “deadly force,” according to the NOTAM.

The temporary flight restrictions have been implemented over a large and significantly populated area of New Jersey, including the following locations:

Jersey City, Bayonne, Elizabeth, Harrison, Kearny, Edison, Bridgewater, Cedar Grove, Hamilton, North and South Brunswick, Branchburg, Woodbridge, Clifton, Westampton, Winslow, Gloucester City and Camden.

Drone operators who violate restricted airspace may have their drones intercepted and be "detained and interviewed by law enforcement/security personnel," according to the alert.

The FAA cautioned that violators risk having their operators' certificates suspended or revoked and could face criminal charges.

ABC News reported, the previously issued temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster, home of President-elect Donald Trump’s golf club, and the military’s Picatinny Arsenal, where drone sightings have previously been confirmed, remain in place

Since first appearing in New Jersey skies on November 18th, the FBI has received over 5,000 tips about drone sightings in the tri-state area, according to a statement released on Monday by the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the FAA, and the Department of Defense.

The New York Post reports that the Biden Administration has repeatedly downplayed the situation, even as area residents and lawmakers have demanded answers and action regarding the mysterious aircraft.

The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI announced on Monday that they are finally deploying drone detection technology and infrared cameras to assess any potential threat posed by the unidentified flying objects.

If you spot a drone, please make sure to report it to authorities.
