Gena Rowlands, actress best known for The Notebook dies at age 94

Actress Gena Rowlands, best known for her role in The Notebook, has passed away at the age of 94 after a battle with Alzheimer’s.


Rowlands passed away Wednesday at her home in Indian Wells, California, surrounded by loved ones, according to TMZ. Her husband, Robert Forrest, and daughter, 58-year-old Alexandra Cassavetes, were present.


Representatives for her son, filmmaker Nick Cassavetes, confirmed Rowlands' death on Wednesday.


Earlier this year, Rowland's son disclosed that his mother had Alzheimer’s disease.

Rowlands made 10 films across four decades with Cassavetes, including “Minnie and Moskowitz” in 1971, “Opening Night” in 1977 and “Love Streams” in 1984.


Her son, Nick Cassavetes, directed her in the 2004 romance hit that featured Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.


Rowlands is best known for playing the older version of McAdams in The Notebook.


In the movie, her character had Alzheimer’s and an older version of Gosling narrated their love story to her to help her memory.
