The Northeast Extension (I-476) will be closed in both directions starting at 11:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24 through 4:00 a.m. Monday, March 25 between the Mahoning Valley Interchange, Exit 74, and the State Route 903 Interchange, Exit 87, Carbon County, according to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
The closure is necessary for the protection of motorists and workers so crews can safely remove overhead bridge beams, according to the PTC. The bridge, which carries Hatchery Road over the Turnpike, is at milepost A83.88 in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County.
During the road closure, the entry and exit ramps at Hickory Run Service Plaza will be closed to all traffic.
Visitors who do not exit the service plaza prior to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24 will have to remain in the service plaza until the work is completed and the ramps are reopened to traffic, according to the PTC. The Hickory Run Service Plaza is located on I-476 at milepost 86.10 in Carbon County.
Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers.
Digital message signs will also provide information on closures and detours.
Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.
Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly.
Northbound Detour
Take U.S. Route 209 for south 6.5 miles to State Route 903 north for 10.4 miles. Re-enter the PA Turnpike at the State Route 903 Interchange, Exit 87.
Southbound Detour
Take State Route 903 south for 10.4 miles to State Route 209 north for 6.4 miles. Re-enter the PA Turnpike at the Mahoning Valley Interchange, Exit 74.
