Kutztown University professor dies hiking Mount Ararat in Turkey

A professor from Kutztown University and another climber died while descending from the 16,853-foot summit of Mount Ararat in Turkey.

Mount Ararat is a snow-capped and dormant compound volcano in Eastern Turkey, according to Wikipedia. It consists of two major volcanic cones - Greater Ararat and Little Ararat.

News of the climbers' deaths was reported by the Demiroren News Agency, which identified them on Monday as Muhammed Halim Dalgin and Dilek Gokbulak.

Kutztown University confirmed Tuesday that Dalgin was an associate professor of business administration who had taught at the university since 2008.

A message of condolence was sent to the campus community Tuesday morning.

The message stated that Dalgin had been on a sabbatical over the last year while studying sustainable food chains. It also mentioned that during his sabbatical, Dalgin had the opportunity to travel extensively, as it was one of his passions.

Dalgin’s travels took him to Turkey, where he joined a group of climbers to ascend Mount Ararat in the Dogubeyazit district of the Agri province of Turkey.

On Saturday, the group reached the summit of the mountain. - Greater Ararat is the highest peak in Turkey, according to Wikipedia.

According to the report from the news agency, the group ran into difficulty while trying to descend the summit and became stranded at a high altitude due to fog and a snowstorm.

It was at this time Dalgin and Gokbulak went missing from the group.

Tragically, the climbers’ bodies were discovered frozen on the northern route known as the “glacier plateau” at an altitude of 4,800 meters, Demiroren said.

Rescue teams were working Tuesday to remove the bodies from the mountain.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family, loved ones, and the entire Kutztown University community.
