Large brush fire continues to burn near Jim Thorpe

JIM THORPE, Pa - A large brush fire is still burning near Jim Thorpe, PA, and could continue to burn for a week. According to reports, it now spans approximately 600 acres.


Both state and local firefighters have been battling the fire for nearly two days now. Numerous fire departments have been called in to help fight the fire.


According to the DCNR, 10 to 15 percent of the fire is contained.


Crews are battling the fire from the air in addition to on the ground.


The brush fire is in the area of Bear Mountain.

According to Jacob Novitsky, a fire forester with DCNR, the Long Run Road side is the main priority. He also said new resources are coming in for the night to secure lines already in place.


Novitsky told Channel 69 News, "The access up there is very rough. You can't get vehicles up there."


According to DCNR, no buildings have been lost as of the time of this article.


Novitsky told Channel 69 News, "There's going to be a few houses that are going to be, you know the fire is burning a little bit close to. I wouldn't say threatened, but you know I just want to make sure everything is going to be checked up and everybody can sleep at night."


Support from the community is pouring in.


Novitsky told 69 News that one firefighter sustained a broken rib. He also said that the fire could burn for a week.


The cause of the fire is being investigated
