LVHN introduces two new members of the K-9 security team

Updated: Apr 2

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa - Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) - part of Jefferson

Health, has added two security K-9s capable of detecting firearms.

Dexter, a male black Labrador retriever, and Cisco, a female springer spaniel, are security K-9s skilled in identifying weapons due to their exceptional sense of smell.

Both dogs are about 1 1/2 years old.

Dexter's name signifies being fortunate and skilled, while Cisco's name is associated with freedom and a lively spirit.

Modeled after Hartford Health's K-9 program, Lehigh Valley Health Network adopted the idea as a way to keep patients, colleagues, and the community safe, which "continues to be our focus," Ryan Hay, administrator of Emergency Operations and Public Safety, according to a press release issued Monday.

Dexter and Cisco are members of the Lehigh Valley Health Network's K-9 security team. They have the ability to detect weapons by smell alone.

John Christman, director of Security Services, explained in the same release that Dexter and Cisco will be used for specific detection in the event of an increased concern. Otherwise, he noted, "they are also constantly sniffing for weapons as they routinely make their way through units and public spaces."

Dexter and Cisco will have rotating schedules, which will involve visiting the Lehigh Valley Health Networks' many campuses, noted Kasey O'Connell, an LVHN security officer who will be paired with and serve as a full-time handler for Cisco. Dexter will be paired and handled by O'Connell's colleague Ed Mayer.
