A 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea Saturday night, prompting a tsunami warning across the region, with potential waves reaching up to 10 feet in Cuba.

The quake was detected just before 6:30 p.m. local time, approximately 129 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands, at a depth of about 6 miles, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami warning following the event.

Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Belize, and Haiti are all facing a potential tsunami threat.

Tsunami advisories have been released for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, according to reports.

Hazardous sea level changes and strong ocean currents may start along the western coast of Puerto Rico around 8:46 p.m., approximately 30 minutes before the first waves are expected to reach the Virgin Islands, as stated by the US National Tsunami Warning Center.

Waves are predicted to be less than a foot, with possible tsunami waves up to 10 feet along Cuba's coast.

The earthquake resulted from strike-slip faulting in the shallow crust near the boundary of the North American and Caribbean plates, according to the USGS.

“Fortunately, the remote location of these earthquakes minimizes the potential for significant damage due to shaking,” stated the USGS.

Thankfully no injuries or damage have been reported.
