Northampton County reports issue with voting machines affecting PA Superior Court retention races

Northampton County officials said they found an issue with its voting machines affecting the Pennsylvania Superior Court retention races on Tuesday’s ballot.

The county said in a news release Tuesday morning that the issue is only affecting the retention races for Superior Court, affecting Judge Jack Panella and Judge Victor P. Stabile.

It appears that when a voter chooses “Yes” or “No” for one of the candidates for retention, the selection is sometimes being recorded on the paper ballot and the machine for the other candidate, the county said.

The issue arises when a voter chooses “Yes” for one candidate and “No” for another, according to the news release.

The Elections office notified all poll workers and instructed them to tell voters before getting into the voting booth that there is an issue with recording their vote for the candidates for retention to the Pennsylvania Superior Court. They will tell them that the paper receipt will record their selection to the other candidate.

The issue appears to only be happening with the specific race, according to the Department of State.

There were reports of voting machine failures Tuesday morning around Northampton County.
