October's Super Hunter Moon rises tonight

The first full moon of Fall will shine brightly on the nights of October 17 and 18, making it one of the brightest moons of the year.

This supermoon, the third of four consecutive ones in 2024, will appear slightly larger and brighter than a typical full moon.

Known as the Hunter Moon, this month's full moon marks the time when hunters traditionally start hunting to stockpile food for the winter months.

Other names for October's full moon include the Falling Leaves Moon, the Migrating Moon, and the Freezing Moon.

Autumn is also often referred to as "meteor shower season" with more meteor showers than any other season of the year.

Oct. 20-21: Orionid meteor shower

The Orionids meteor shower in mid-October is usually a highlight of the autumn sky, but this year, it might not be as impressive due to the presence of another celestial event.

Typically, the Orionids produce about 20 shooting stars per hour, which is twice as many as the Draconids earlier in the month. However, in 2024, the nearly full moon is expected to greatly reduce visibility of the meteor shower on the night of October 20 and into the early hours of October 21, according to the American Meteor Society.

Despite this, observers may still catch a few shooting stars throughout the night, particularly after midnight.

To maximize the chances of seeing meteors, experts advise looking towards darker areas of the sky where the moon is not obstructing the view.

Also, don't miss your chance to see the comet. Photographers are already capturing amazing images of Comet C/2023 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) in the morning sky.

Early risers should have more opportunities to spot the comet throughout the month.

WHY ADVERTISE WITH WGOLV:

  • What's gonig on in the Lehigh Valley specializes in small business and event promotion for nearly 14 years. We are very creative with what we do and how we do it. There's a lot more to promotion than just posting a flyer. We believe in educating the public on your business, product, service etc. The better-informed people are, the more likely they are to make a decision to use that service, business, product etc. That's why we especially like doing a live broadcast (which can also be downloaded and used in articles, reels etc, and for you to keep) and in-person interviews. That way, we can "show " the Lehigh Valley your business. I call the complete package of what we do - articles, flyers, pinned posts, live broadcasts, and in-person interviews a "Business Showcase." We also suggest being in our exclusive Business Directory and we can offer discounts and specials for Followers and Subscribers - Display and Banner Advertising is available as well. That way people continue to see your business name over and over.

  • WGOLV has over 80,000 followers on the Facebook page of What's going on in the Lehigh Valley (WGOLV) and growing daily. It's an extremely popular news source in the Lehigh Valley that people say they check daily. People repeatedly say they "love the page." It's also followed throughout the country - even some internationally (many who relocate also continue to follow it - some people I've run into at events told me how they still follow it and see the events promoted), but primarily in our region. Pinned posts to the top of the page are always highly visible for that reason. All music-related events are cross-posted to Music in the Lehigh Valley.

  • We offer package pricing and events have drawn out thousands - many have also found out about businesses being featured through WGOLV - numerous testimonials available.
