Pennsylvania Turnpike scam strikes again

Ava E. Lobach

Pennsylvania residents continue to report receiving scam text messages, following a previous scam pretending to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services.

Pennsylvania drivers are receiving texts claiming to be from the Pennsylvania Turnpike, informing recipients that they must pay a balance of $10.60 or else they will be fined $106.

However, the number responsible for the message uses a Canadian area code. These messages also contain a fraudulent link.

The texts are similar to another scam from last month, when nearly 100 Pennsylvanians received messages from scammers once again purporting to be from the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The message urged recipients to settle a $8.60 balance to avoid being charged $86 and also contained a harmful link.

In reality, the Pennsylvania Turnpike does not use text messages to communicate with drivers.

86% of the half million people who use the Turnpike are billed via EZ-Pass. The remaining percentage receive invoices in the mail when their license plates are captured by Turnpike cameras.

This is the third time scammers have targeted Pennsylvanian drivers by impersonating tolling services, but similar scams have been reported across the U.S. for months.

Recipients are encouraged to delete the text and not click on any links within.
