An announcement also was made by the President of Indiana University of Pennsylvania regarding two students who were injured at the incident:
Many of you may have heard about the violence that took place early this morning at the Chevy Chase Community Center in Indiana, PA. One of the most comprehensive media reports is by the Greensburg Tribune Review: 1 dead, at least 8 others injured in mass shooting at Indiana County party. As alumni and friends of IUP, I want you to have the most updated information about the situation and our ongoing work to support our students. I am saddened to tell you that two IUP students who were present at the incident were injured. We have been in communication with these students and they have been released from Indiana Regional Medical Center after treatment. We will continue to provide these students, and their families, with the appropriate support. We do not yet have the names of the other individuals who were injured; see below for the most recent State Police news release about the shooting, distributed at 10:30 a.m. Should we learn of additional students or other members of the IUP community present at this incident, or otherwise affected by this violence, we will work individually with them to provide appropriate assistance. We have made all of our students aware of general support resources available to them. Communications with our students and employees began shortly after 1:30 a.m. today, working closely with the Pennsylvania State Police (the lead agency) and IUP Police for the appropriate recommendations for their safety. These messages continued via text and email through the night, informing students that the suspect(s) was (and remains) at large, and telling students to remain in a secure location. After talking with the police, in our communication at 8:30 a.m. today we updated our messaging from “stay in a secure location” to “avoid the incident location and remain vigilant if you leave your secure location.” Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Tom Segar provided an update to students early this morning about support resources, as well as information that two of our students were injured at the incident: Additional Follow Up on Last Night’s Incident.
Events planned on the Indiana campus today have continued as scheduled, including regular hours for our dining facilities, the community cleanup, and the bands concert; IUP police have an increased and visible presence on the Indiana campus. We will provide an update to students and employees at 5 p.m. At this time, the suspect(s) remain at large. We will provide additional updates to you as appropriate. Thank you for your ongoing support of IUP and our students.
Sincerely,
President Driscoll
