Police shut down Interstate 75 in Kentucky after reports of multiple people being shot by an active shooter

Interstate 75 near London, Kentucky, was shut down by police on Saturday evening due to reports of an active shooter.

London Mayor Randall Weddle reported that seven people were injured in an incident on I-75. Some of the injuries were not from gunshots but resulted from a traffic accident at the scene.

At least two of the injured individuals were transported to UK HealthCare, although their conditions were not disclosed, as confirmed by ABC News.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Scottie Pennington announced the capture of a suspect and advised residents to remain indoors and avoid the area, according to ABC News.

A person of interest, 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch, was identified by the sheriff's office as "armed and dangerous," with authorities noting the challenging terrain where he is believed to be located.

No further details about the incident were immediately available.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said in a statement on X that Interstate 75 was shut down in both directions at exit 49 and assured that he was closely monitoring the situation.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' Louisville office is assisting the state police in the investigation, according to an announcement by the agency.
