Police: Whitehall Twp. man was attempting to steal copper from inside electrical apparatus at old substation in Allen Twp. before getting stuck


ALLEN TWP., Pa. - According to a press release by the Pennsylvania State Police, a 45-year-old man from Whitehall, PA was attempting to steal copper from inside an electrical apparatus at an old substation in Allen Township when he got stuck on Sunday (Christmas Eve).


Troopers responded to the old substation, behind Siegfried Substation, at West 27th Street in Northampton County at 1 p.m. and used a nearby ladder to locate him, police said.


After about six hours, the person was successfully rescued and provided further medical emergency attention, according to the news release.


Northampton County District Attorney's office approved felony burglary as well as criminal trespass and other applicable charges.

In a Facebook post, Allen Township Fire Company wrote, "On behalf of the Allen Township Fire Co., I would like to thank everyone involved with the Rescue today at the PPL Substation in Allen Township. This would include personnel from the following agencies who were at the scene or on standby coverage."


"PA State PoliceNorthampton County Stations 45, 42, 46, 47, 15, 48 and EMS 49. Also EMA 3 and 5.Lehigh County Stations 5, 2, 11, 43, Special Ops. 42 and Rehab Units."


"In addition, I would also like to thank the Services of Yocum Towing, Andy Carr for the crane and Northampton Boro Public Works and all the Fire Police on duty."


"After 5 hours, the victim was safely extricated and transported to the hospital.

It was a successful mission, but most importantly, all of the first responders safely went home to their families on Christmas Eve. To me that was a great day"

Police say, a transformer at the substation, worth $800,000, was damaged in the incident.


There's no word yet on the person's condition.
