Severe thunderstorm causes widespread power outages, downs trees in the Lehigh Valley and Poconos

Thousands of customers are without power in the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos after a severe thunderstorm brought wind gusts of nearly 60 mph to the Lehigh Valley Wednesday evening downing trees and power lines.

Some individuals on our social media page observed significant dust, as captured in the photo below in Tatamy, PA. One person noted the formation of a funnel in the vicinity of their residence in Old Orchard, which lasted around 10 seconds. No reports of tornadoes have been confirmed. Additionally, there were reports of hail by others.

Reports on our "What's Going on in the Lehigh Valley" Facebook page and PPL's outage map also indicate widespread power outages.

Specifically, more than 18,000 customers in Lehigh County, over 20,000 in Northampton County, and about 3,000 in Carbon County are affected.

PPL also reports that Monroe County has over 8,000 customers without power, while Schuylkill County has more than 11,000 customers impacted.
