Traveling the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County? A stretch of I-476 to be closed early Sunday

If you plan to travel on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County early Sunday, please note that a section of the road will be closed in both directions for six hours.


The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced on Friday that the closure will be in effect between the Mahoning Valley (Exit 74) and Route 903 (Exit 87) interchanges from midnight on Saturday until 6 a.m. on Sunday.



This temporary closure is necessary for bridge maintenance, according to the news release.

Traffic will be directed off the highway - See below.


The following is a suggested detour for northbound traffic:

Route 209 south for 6.5 miles

Route 903 north for 10.4 miles

Reenter at the Route 903 interchange


The suggested detour for southbound traffic is:

Route 903 south for 10.4 miles

Route 209 north for 6.4 miles

Reenter at the Mahoning Valley interchange



The Commission said state police and turnpike crews will be positioned to assist drivers during the work. Digital message signs will also alert motorists about the shutdown.


The Commission noted that the scheduled work could be adjusted based on weather conditions.
